Here's the thing about luxury boudoir photography: it's not something you just "show up" for.
This isn't a passport photo or a quick headshot. A fine art boudoir session is a threshold experience, and how you prepare for it matters as much as the session itself.
I'm not talking about a to-do list. I'm talking about creating an actual ritual. Something intentional. Something that tells your nervous system, "We're doing this. We're stepping into something sacred."
Because that's exactly what this is.
I've worked with hundreds of women who've never felt at home in their bodies. Women who were told they weren't enough, thin enough, curvy enough, young enough, whatever bullshit narrative got lodged in their brain.
For years, I was one of them.
It wasn't until I did my own boudoir session that I realized: the getting ready part? That's where the shift starts. Not when you walk into the studio. Before that. When you're in your bathroom moisturizing your skin, picking out the lingerie that makes you feel like her, lighting a candle and saying, "This is for me."
That's the ritual. That's where you start reclaiming your body as your own.
So yeah, I'm going to walk you through the logistics, what to shave and when, what to bring, all that, but I want you to approach every single step as an act of honoring yourself. Not performing. Not fixing. Honoring.
5 Days Before Your Session:
This is when you start softening.
Book the massage. Take the long bath. Go to bed early. Do whatever your version of "dropping into your body" looks like. For some women, that's yoga. For others, it's a glass of wine and a journal. There's no wrong answer.
The goal here is simple: ease the nerves. You're about to do something vulnerable and powerful, and your body needs to know it's safe.
Spoiler: you're going to feel nervous. Every woman does. That's normal. That's human. But if you spend these few days treating yourself like someone worth celebrating? That energy carries into the session.
3 Days Before:
Start hydrating like your life depends on it. Seriously. Water, water, and more water. Your skin will thank you. So will your hair. So will the photos.
If you're planning any waxing or serious grooming, now's the time. Do not do it the day before. Give your skin a day or two to chill out so you're not showing up with irritation or red bumps.
Also? Exfoliate gently. Moisturize everything. Think of your skin as a canvas you're prepping for something beautiful.
1-2 Days Before:
This is your final grooming window. Shave if that's your thing (or don't, your body, your rules). Deep condition your hair. Paint your nails if you want, but keep the color neutral, nude, soft pink, or a classic red photograph beautifully.
And here's a big one: avoid tight clothing. Elastic waistbands, bras with underwire, anything that leaves marks on your skin. You want to show up looking smooth and soft, not like you just peeled yourself out of Spanx.
I've said this before and I'll say it again: bring what makes you feel like you.
Not what you think a boudoir shoot "should" look like. Not what Instagram told you is sexy. What makes you feel incredible when you put it on.
That said, here's the practical breakdown:
And listen, if you're stressing about what to wear, I've got you. Wardrobe styling support is part of the experience at Amber Holmes Studio. We'll talk through your options ahead of time, and I'll help you pull together pieces that photograph like art.

The night before your luxury boudoir photography session is not the time to go hard at the gym, stay up late scrolling, or stress-eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's (okay, maybe a little Ben & Jerry's).
Here's what you do instead:
This is the part where you start to shift from "holy shit, I'm doing this" to "holy shit, I'm doing this."
Same sentence. Different energy.
Morning of your session:
Keep your face clean and moisturized, but skip the heavy makeup. I work with a professional hair and makeup artist who's going to customize your glam to match your vibe. She's incredible, and she'll make you look like the best version of yourself, not a stranger.
Drink water. Eat something light but nourishing. Avoid caffeine if you're already jittery.
Wear something loose and comfortable to the studio, think a button-up shirt or a zip-up hoodie so you don't mess up your hair and makeup when you change.
Bring a water bottle and a light snack. Sessions can be a few hours, and you'll want to stay hydrated and energized.
And here's the most important thing: show up as you are.
Not who you think you should be. Not the "perfect" version. You. Messy, nervous, excited, scared, powerful, all of it. That's the woman I'm here to photograph.
Look, I get it. You're going to walk into the studio with a knot in your stomach. You're going to wonder if you're "ready." If you look good enough. If you'll know what to do with your hands.
Here's what I need you to know: you don't have to have it figured out.
That's my job.
I'm going to guide you through every single pose. I'm going to start with the easy stuff while you get comfortable, and we'll gradually move into the more vulnerable moments. I'll tell you where to put your hands, how to angle your body, when to soften your face.
All you have to do is trust me. And trust yourself.
This process, the preparation, the ritual, the session itself, it's not about being perfect. It's about being present. It's about showing up for yourself in a way maybe no one ever taught you to.
And yeah, it's vulnerable as hell. But that's where the magic is.
If you're reading this, you're already doing the work. You're already preparing. You're already honoring yourself by even considering a luxury boudoir photography experience.
The rest? We'll handle together.
If you want to talk through your session, ask questions, or just get a vibe check to see if we're the right fit, reach out. I'm not for everyone, and that's the point. But if you're looking for something raw, intentional, and deeply transformative? Let's create something beautiful.
Because you deserve to see yourself the way I'm going to see you: powerful, present, and absolutely worthy of being celebrated.
